November 2005 Sewer Project Update

November, 2005

Dear Future Sewer User:

At long last, we are happy to inform you that the sewer project has been completed and individual homeowners may now begin connecting to the system.  Following is a list of steps you need to complete to accomplish such connection:

1.      Obtain an Application for Service Connection from the Town Hall.  Applications are available either online at the Town’s web site, townofstockbridge.com, at the Tax Collector’s office in Town Hall, or by calling the Selectmen’s office at (413) 298-4714.
2.      Fill out the application with the assistance of your contractor and/or plumber, providing us with details of how you propose to connect to the sewer.  In some cases, if the connection is complicated, you may need the assistance of an engineer.
3.      Bring (or mail) the completed application, together with an Application Fee of $100.00 to the Tax Collector’s office at the Town Hall, P.O. Box 417, Stockbridge, MA 01262.
4.      The application will be reviewed by the Sewer Department personnel.  If everything is in order, they will sign off on the connection and we will approve the application.
5.      You will then be notified of the approval and asked to contact the Sewer Department when your contractor is ready to install the connection.  Upon receipt by the Tax Collector of a Sewer Connection Fee in the amount of $450.00 per bedroom, (number of bedrooms as listed on the Board of Assessors records) the Sewer Department will set up an appointment to inspect and approve the actual connection.  At this point you may begin discharging sewage into the system.

For those of you needing sewer grinder pumps, a list of contractors who have taken an  approved training course is available either online at the Town’s web site, or by calling the Selectmen’s office at (413) 298-4714.  As you may know, the Town has secured a guaranteed price from a supplier of the required grinder pump, in the amount of $2,450.00, plus sales tax of $122.50 for a total of $2,572.50. This price is for model number 2010-93 and this price will remain firm until a new extended date of April 30, 2006.  Orders for these pumps may be made by calling F.R. Mahony & Associates, 273 Weymouth Street, Rockland, MA, at 1-800-791-6132 and asking for either Ellen at Ext. 31 or Tracey at Ext.29.

All homes being served will have to connect to the system by April 30, 2007.  For those of you who feel your septic system is properly working and do not wish to connect, you must contact the Tri-Town Health Department at (413) 243-5540 and request a waiver.  To receive a waiver, you will be required to have a Title 5 inspection done every two years to assure that your septic system has not failed and continues to operate in an acceptable manner.

We thank you again for your patience over the past two years and look forward to the environmental benefits this new system will bring.  If you have any questions, please feel free to call Tony Campetti at the Sewer Department at (413) 298-4067.

Sincerely,

Stockbridge Sewer and Water Commission
